Thetford Mines is a city in Québec’s Chaudière-Appalaches region, in the Appalachian foothills southwest of Québec City. It grew as a major asbestos-mining centre; mine dumps and pit landscapes still mark the city’s edge. Downtown sits in a valley of working-class neighbourhoods and service streets. About 26,000 people live in Thetford Mines.
